TMP006 General Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP006

I have some general question about the performance of the TMP006 that are not answered by the datasheet:

  1. Is this the lowest-power version of this technology?
  2. Is this the smallest form-factor version of this technology?
  3. What band in the IR is the sensor observing? We do other things with infrared light, and it will be very important for me to know exactly what frequencies will interfere with its operation and which will not.
  4. Can I power it off and on? What is its turn-on time? How much power does it consume on start up?
  • Hello David,

Thank you for your interest in the TMP006.

    1. Is this the lowest-power version of this technology?
Yes, as this is the only existing version of the device.
    2. Is this the smallest form-factor version of this technology?
Yes, as this is the only existing version of the device.
    3. What band in the IR is the sensor observing?
The TMP006 observes IR energy in the 4μm to 8μm band of the spectrum. I've attached the  transmission characteristic graph.
    4. Can I power it off and on? What is its turn-on time? How much power does it consume on start up?
You can power it off and on via the "mode of operation" bits in the Configuration Register. I don't currently have data on the turn-on time and if there are any spikes in power consumption at start up. I will investigate these characteristics and report back to you soon.

  • Hello again David,

    1. The start-up time for the TMP006 is 60μs, so it's insignificant compared to the 250ms conversion time.
    2. There are no significant spikes in power consumption at start-up. The device will simply consume the appropriate amount of power relative to the mode in which it's operating. Since immediately on power-up the TMP006 will be in continuous-conversion mode, the current consumption should be in line with the 240μA typical spec.
