TMP401: Setup/initialization & Readback Troubleshooting

Part Number: TMP401

Goodafternoon,

We utilize this sensor in a few of our system assemblies and are running into some issues at system test with the readback, so I have a few questions Im looking for clarification on after looking at your datasheet for this component.

  1. I see this component is characterized down to -40C (aswell as being rated to -40C), do you have expectations of performance below that, such as -45C that you could provide. I understand you cannot guarantee performance, but we are looking to understand what we are observing when we are testing down there, we are observing readbacks of a static +64C whenever we drop below -40C, but the component presents a nominal readback above that threshold.
  2. Is there a way for us to test this component on its own? Does TI have a testbed for that? How do you test them? If so, is that something that could be provided?
  3. Just to check off the boxes, Im also looking to verify that the way we initialize the part aligns with what you have listed in the datasheet. Looking at the datasheet, I can see specified voltages, currents, and timing thresholds. Is there anything else related to the initialization of this part that we could compare from our initialization process to your datasheet?
  • Hello Josh,

The temperature range for the TMP401 actually goes from -55C to 150C, so that -45C should be within range. Is this sensor in an existing system that's been in use or is it newly implemented and being tested?

For testing the device on its own, it is recommended to purchase a coupon board. I would start by sweeping the temperature range at your desired register settings.

If you provide more information towards verifying your initialization process, I could look into finding that information for you. Any other information regarding the system would be helpful as well.

  • Goodafternoon Gage, thank you for the response.

Can you point me to where in the datasheet it displays -55C? In the second paragraph of 7.3.1, the following is shown "Additionally, the TMP401 is rated only for ambient temperatures ranging from–40°C to +125°C." Is that statement false? In addition, the part appears to be characterized only down to -40C in the plots in 6.7 Typical Characteristics.

  • Also, if you could point me towards the PN of the board youre referencing, that would be helpful.

  • Hello Josh,

In 7.3.1 it says that the device is rated for temperatures down to -40C, however this refers primarily to the temperature the device is capable of withstanding. The sensor should be able to report local temperatures down to -55C but that range doesn't ensure reliability or accuracy, so it is generally advised against doing so.

We don't sell a coupon board, so it is recommended to use one that fits the device's package. Once possible, please provide the results you get from the tests, as well as your register values.
