I'm trying to use the designer for a sensor with an 8:1 electrical to mechanical ratio, but it hangs every time the "Compute Spice Model" gets to the bit where it tries to fit a curve to Target-Sense inductance data. Exact same geometry works for any electrical to mechanical ratio less than 8:1. No amount of fiddling with the geometry seems to work at 8:1 or higher.

Is this a fundamental limitation of the simulation tool?

Side note: I have quite a bit of freedom with respect to the inner and outer diameters of the sensor. Is there an optimum ratio for best accuracy?

Hi Paul,

Thank you for posting on the sensors forum! When you are designing your 8:1 ratio board are you using the standard design tab, or the custom sensor tab?

Hi Paul,

To be able to increase your mechanical ratio just save your initial design and go to the custom sensor tab. The custom sensor tab has an import button that allows you to import the current design. Select the box that says to use the custom design to create Gerber files and then change the sensor parameters as you please and save your design when you are done. Then create your Gerber files and they should be ready with your desired EM ratio.

I have no issue creating gerbers, what I would like is to be able to run the error estimator with an 8:1 e/m ratio. Thats really the whole point of having this simulation tool. Note that using the custom sensor tab to generate a SPICE model also fails with 8:1 E/M ratio.

Hi Paul,

I do not suggest relying on the simulation tool results because there are not enough datapoints collected to have high accuracy. The tool is mainly a resource to assist with designing the geometry of the coil and generating Gerbers. I would recommend having the board manufactured and then testing its performance and using the properties of the generated design in the LDC calculator tool to determine Rp, Q, L and other desired values.

Well, thats disappointing. Iterating hardware is slow and expensive. Perhaps in the future the tool's creator could add an option to increase the number of datapoints calculated.
