TMP006 Minimum temperature behavior

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP006

Hi,

I am going to be using the TMP006 application where temperatures of less than -45 degrees C can be experienced. I do not need accurate measurements at that temperature, but I would like to know how the output will behave. Will the readings bottom out at -40 degC? Or will the readings become unpredictable?

thanks

-Sean

  • Hello Sean,

The absolute minimum operating temperature of the TMP006 is -55°C, and the local and IR temperature sensors can function down to that temperature. However, if the ambient temperature drops lower than -55°C we can not guarantee the behavior of the device.

  • Thanks for your reply.

I see in the datasheet that the minimum operational range is -55 degC, but it also states that the "Specified Range" minimum is -40 degC. How is the temperature read from the sensor affected when the object is between -40 and -55degC? Will read temperature bottom out at -40degC or will they become erratic?

    thanks again

  • Hello Sean,

The specified range is the range over which we guarantee that the device will perform within the data sheet specifications. The absolute min/max range is the range over which the device will function without possibility of damage or erratic behavior. Therefore, when the ambient temperature is between -40°C and -55°C the TMP006 will still operate, but its performance will likely decrease. The temperature will not "bottom out" at -40°C since the ambient temperature register can support values as low as -55°C.
