WEBENCH and PCB Coil

Hello,

I am trying to make my own PCB with LDC1000 and
PCB coil using TI WEBENCH application.
The parameters for my design are:

Distance - 0.2 cm
Resolution - 0.2um
Diameter of Target - 2cm
Target material - SS416

The result after export to Altium Designer is a 4 layer PCB coil which according to WEBENCH should have 4 mil trace width and 4 mil spacing between the traces, but after analayzing the PCB i have 2.852 mil spacing between some of the traces. Тhe difference between the promised and real spacing is a lot more expensive PCB so i am wandering is it a bug or a feature :)

Hello Valentin,

Trace spacing of less than 4mil is not an intentional feature. I tried to reproduce the issue with your parameters in Altium, but couldn't find any instances where trace spacing is less than 4mil. Which coil (number of turns, diameter) did you select? Could you please send a screenshot that shows where trace spacing is less than 4mil? Thank you.

Hi Valentin,

thank you very much for the screenshots, which allowed me to reproduce the issue here. I am working with the Webench team to find the root cause and resolve the issue.

It was a bit tricky (at least for me), but I managed to draw a "spiral" in AutoCaD (4mil trace, 4 mil spacing) then import the .DXF file in Altium and this is the result.

Hi Valentin,

I'm sorry that you weren't able to use Webench for your coil design this time. I'm glad that you were able to use AutoCAD to design your coil. The Webench team is still working on resolution of the bug, and I will let you know as soon as it has been fixed so that hopefully you can use Webench again for your next coil design.

Hi Ben,

I'm facing same issue.
Any ideas, when Webench-Update will be available, to draw circular spirals instead of 12-sided ones?
I downloaded also other file formats, all are 12-sided.

Hi Gerardo and Valentin,

a fix for the trace width issue (<4mil) has been found. Webench will be updated on Monday 12/08/2013, after which the trace width issue will be resolved.

There is a plan to move to circular spirals in January, but I don't have an exact date yet.

Hi Valentin,

we tried to do it same way, but the import of Autocad-spiral dxf in Altium does not work properly. How did you do it? Any hints / ideas? We have a 4-layer 7.7mm 14 turns spiral, width 0.1mm, spaced 0.1mm. How did you define the spiral in drawing program?

Hello Gerardo, I've made a mistake in my previous post, the spiral was made with CorelDraw :) I was trying at the beginning to draw it with AutoCAD but Corel is easier. In Corel you need to select the spiral tool, then select the properties of the spiral and just draw it. For the 4 layer design you will need 2 spirals -> clockwise and anticlockwise rotation.
