Designing my own PCB coil without Webench.

Hi. I'm trying to design a coil to detect steel from 6 to 10 cm of distance. The webench only allows achieve 7 cm. I have read in other post that the distance is similar to external diam. If I design my own coil, how can I know the measure precision , the diameter of target, and the distance?

To determine the inductance I use this article.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    You can refer to:

Q1: What is the maximum target sensing distance for the LDC1000?

A1: The rule of thumb is

    • for high sensing resolution, a target with a size comparable to the size of the coil can be sensed at a distance of up to half of the coil diameter
    • for presence detection , a target with a size comparable to the size of the coil can be sensed at a distance of up to the coil diameter

So we can konw the diameter will relate to sensing distance and precision, can you tell me what kind of accuracy you want to reach? Or you just used for presence detection?

    Regards, Sunny

  • Hi Sunny,

In this case  the accuracy needed is around 1 mm.

Another possibility to improve the distance reached is use a ferrite in the spiral's axis?.

Do you know the range of this improvement? and their accuracy influence?

    Regards, Tino.

  • Hi,

Yes, LDC1000 can reach your goal, both the range and the accuracy.

PCB coil and ferrite are OK, ferrite can detect 70% of coil diameter, which is better than PCB coil, we know PCB coil can detect 50% of coil diameter.

    Regards, Sunny.
