Can we use LDC1000 to detect a steel pipe inside a pipe?

Hi,

We have a client that wants to detect a steel pipe that goes inside another steel pipe. The sensor must be put on the outside pipe. The pipes are 0.5" thick. We were thinking of making the LDC1000 coil wraps around the external pipe and use the minimum LC frequency which according to the datasheet is 5kHz.

Do you think this is going to work?

I think it`s difficult to do it, because 0.5'' is too thick, even work at 5kHz will be difficult.

Yes, it's worth a try.

Some time back I ran a sim for 1/4" pipes, and the results were very positive.

Is your SS magnetic? If not, then the chances are much better.

The only thing is that you will need a lot of turns (on he order of 10,000)

Thanks for the answers.

Do you know how to calculate inductance of a coil around a pipe. I can only find formula for solenoid with solid core.

The pipe is 5" in diameter and 0.5" thick.

The best/easiest way is to simulate it using some FEM.
