TDC1000

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000, TDC7200

Hello,

I just saw TDC 1000 and TDC 7200 EVM product sheets. I am very interested in the TDC 1000 immediately.

The TDC 1000 data sheet is only 3 pages and is not detailed enough. How do I get more detailed info on these ASAP.?

Dennis

  • Hi Dennis,

Thanks for your interest in the TDC1000 and TDC7200.  We will release the full datasheet soon, so let me check with the technical writer to see its progress and what we can send right now.

Can you please let us know what kind of application you are using the TDC1000 and TDC7200 for? Perhaps we can help while we wait for the datasheet.

    Thanks.

  • HI AmyLe,

I am designing [another] ultrasound transit time (TOF) dual transducer differential ("channel swapping") industrial custody transfer flow meter. Transducer frequencies are 200KHz to 2MHz.

What is the maximum clk input of TDC1000 and TDC7200? (>=24Mhz would be ideal).

What amplifiers are recommended to boost signal chain total gain to 60-80 dB?

What is maximum clk freq for TDC1000-TDC7200EVM at connector J8?  (>=24 MHz would be ideal)

Any info regarding power consumption at high frequencies and high gains would be helpful.

I ordered the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM today. What are parameters and P/N's of the "test cell" referenced in the EVM users guide. How can I obtain the those parts?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

  • Hi Dennis,

The TDC1000 datasheet says typical fCLKIN is 16MHz, but I know that a 24MHz should be ok too.  On the board, we have an 8MHz oscillator.

The TDC1000 has internal amplifiers with a total gain of 41dB. I don't have a recommendation for an external amplifier at the moment but can look into it.  How come you will need 60-80dB gain for your flow application? I would like to learn more.

    Some info on the power:

    • Typical Operating current = 1.8uA @ 2SPS
    • Sleep = 0.61uA

The test cell is a plastic box that we built ourselves for level sensing, not flow.   The sensors mounted on the bottom of this tank is http://www.steminc.com/PZT/en/piezo-ceramic-disc-10x2mm-r-215-khz, and we got the small acrylic test tank from http://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_containers/clear_plastic_boxes/222 #752.

Are you working with a TI representative (or a TI employee)?  If you can share any info on your flow application, I would like to learn more.  Thanks.

  • Hi AmyLe,

We expect receive transducer signal levels to be 75-100 uVolts. The TDC1000 signal chain output would be digitized (most ADC's require 1-2 volts pk-pk). Therefore, 80 dB of gain is required.

Thank you for the links to the sensor and container manufacturers.

My TI rep is Tim Kelvas from Avnet. He is aware of our interest in the TDC1000 & TDC7200. He is also trying to get more tech info for us regarding these parts.

The receiver multiplexer can be a major challenge in precision flow metering because it can introduce stability and calibration problems.

How is the receiver multiplexing accomplished (i.e. analog switches, diode steering, etc.)? Is there additional tech info  or specifications regarding the receive multiplexer and its operation?

    Dennis

  • Hi Dennis,

Thank you for your information. Do you know if your company has an NDA with us? Please check with the TI rep.  If an NDA is in place, then I can send you the datasheet.  If not, the TDC1000 will be released to the market next month, so you'll be able to get the full datasheet at that time. Let us know if you need help to get an NDA in place.

We are actively working on Impedance Matching circuit to get better accuracy for flow metering.  I'm thinking this might be something of an interest for you as well (since you mentioned about the receive multiplexer issue).  We don't have a final circuit yet since we are still working on a solution, but if you have tried out similar circuits, we would love to exchange ideas with you.

Also, feel free to contact our system apps engineer Bahram Mirshab @ Bahram.Mirshab@ti.com. Bahram has been working with flow for quite some time and may be able to give you more information on the receive multiplexer and flow metering accuracy.  Thanks.

  • Hi AmyLe,

I have received the tdc1000_7200evm kit.

I have downloaded and installed the GUI SW. It partially works..

I have a windows 8.1 machine. I have the problem that is described in sinu021.pdf pages 16-17.

I try to update the driver software and the following error report is issued:

I don't think this is related to windows "driver signing" issues because I have disabled signature verification with the following procedure (which has worked before):

Procedure to Bypass Windows Digital Signature Verification

    1. Press Windows Key + R
    2. Enter shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
    3. Click the “OK” button.
    4. System will restart to a “Choose an option” screen
    5. Select “Troubleshoot” from “Choose an option” screen
    6. Select “Advanced options” from “Troubleshoot” screen
    7. Select “Windows Startup Settings” from “Advanced options” screen
    8. Click “Restart” button
    9. System will restart to “Advanced Boot Options” screen
    10. Select “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement”
    11. Once the system starts, install the drivers and your Digital Signature verification is no more.

    Follow procedure :

    http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

    Please help.

  • Hi Dennis,

Let me ask our firmware engineer about this. I will give you a status update on Thursday.

  • Hi Dennis,

I just spoke to our firmware engineer, and unfortunately, this GUI does not support windows 8.  Do you have Windows 7 to try?

  • Hi AmyLe,

Only Win 8.1....I will see if we have other machines.....don't have a good feeling....

    Dennis

  • Hi Dennis,

The GUI is based on NI LabVIEW and we have mostly tested it on Windows 7. According to NI it should work on Windows 8 but we have not checked it. I just checked the NI Serial VISA driver used in the build is compatible with Windows 8.

As part of the GUI installation, the driver file (TDC1000_7200_EVM_DRIVER.inf) automatically gets copied to "C:\Windows\inf" folder. In Windows 8, the folder paths may have changed causing the error. I have enclosed here a zip with the driver file. Please unzip and try if it will work with this driver file

    1854.TDC1000_7200_EVM_DRIVER.zip.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Vishy,

I extracted the file, placed it in c:\windows\inf folder, and tried to update the USB driver.

Same results as before with same error message.

I compared the original '.inf' file and the '.inf' file you sent me...they are the same - no differences...(compared with word.exe  and fc.exe).

Note: the original installation placed the original TDC1000_7200_EVM_DRIVER.inf file in the c:\windows\inf folder.

Note: The update driver procedure seems to successfully execute a few steps before issuing the error message - it does not fail immediately. Specifically, the progress bar completes (100%) a few times before issuing the file not found error message.

    Dennis

  • Dennis,

We are wondering if your install issue is connected to disabling driver signature enforcement. We followed the steps in the link below to do this on a windows 8 machine.

    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-can-i-install-hardware-with-unsigned-drivers-in-windows-8/

Then we could get the GUI and Driver working.

    Thanks.

  • Vishy,

Driver signature enforcement was disabled. Still no good.

The error message is not about driver signature verification enforcement...it is about a file that is missing or can't be found (maybe in unexpected location).

FYI: I have previously successfully installed drivers for another TI eval kit that required disabling of driver signature enforcement (notably the drivers for the TI TX-SDK-V2/NOPB eval kit).

Can you supply a file map that indicates the required files and their associated full path names?

    Dennis

  • Dennis,

As far as the driver is concerned, the INF file is the only windows required file. It instructs windows to associate the system driver "usbser.sys" to this device. In Windows 7, usbser.sys is windows provided and can found under C:\Windows\System32\drivers. No other files for driver as far as I know.

    Thanks.
