TDC1000 in Proximity Sensing Application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000, TDC7200EVM

Dear Team,

There is a ultrasonic proximity sensing in medical application. I am wondering if our TDC1000 fits here.

The sensing distance is around 40cm to  80cm. Targeted error is around 1% meaning 4mm to 8mm error.

They wants to sense distance between human face and a machine. The ultrasonic sensor will be put on the machine.

Below is the ultrasonic sensing module they are surveying.

May I know if there are transducer which can meet below spec?

Can our TDC1000+TDC7200EVM and boost board working with the transducer meet customer specs as below shown?

  1. Distance of 80cm, error of 8mm, angle of 7 degree
  2. Distance of 40cm, error of 4mm, angle of 14 degree

Thank you!

Regards,

Ting

  • Hi Ting,
At a glance of the parallax transducer, it seems to work with your requirement. However, I did not see a resonant frequency spec (do you know this value?). Our current tdc1000-tdc7200evm should be able to handle your solution, but we are currently designing a board dedicated just for proximity (to be released Q1, 2015). If desired, the boost board can be used as well; we'll have to see if the parallax xDc can handle 30V.
  • Dear Amy,

    Thank you for replying!
May I know if you could suggest transducers which can meet the customer requirements?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Ting,
Sorry for the late response. Here are some transducers we have tested with our TDC1000 for proximity applications:
    - Murata MA40H1S-R- Prowave 400PT160- Prowave 400EP18D
  • Dear Amy,

Thank you for the information! I could not find MA40H1S-R price on the internet. May I know the roughly price of it at 1kunit volume?

    Thank you!
    Regards,
    Ting
  • Hi Ting - here is the link to the Murata sensor: http://www.murata.com/en-us/products/sensor/ultrasonic/open. I'm not quite sure about the 1kunit pricing; I think you will have to search on the Murata's website. Thanks.
  • Hello Amy,

    Thank you for the information!

  • For example, for ƒCLKIN = 8 MHz and TX_FREQ_DIV = 2h (divide by 8), the divided clock frequency is 1 MHz.that's for 1MHz.when i use 40KHz,how can i set the CONFINGER_0?and is there a relation ship with NUM_TX?
  • sorry, you will not be able to get to 40kHz with an 8MHz clock, but don't worry, the GUI gives you an option to use the CPU clock in the Setup tab, just follow the instructions in the GUI, the instructions also tell you to move a jumper on your EVM, make sure you do that, otherwise you will get the wrong clock, now that you are using the CPU clock, choose the 1.26MHz option, now you can choose a TX_FREQ_DIV of 32 option to get to close to 40kHz, please leave CLOCKIN_DIV to divide by 1, there is no need to change this from default, hopefully that is clear enough for you to try
