FDC1004 to measure actual capacitance of a super cap

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC1004

Can the FDC1004 be used to measure the actual capacitance of a SuperCap as it changes over time?
The SCap will have varying amounts of charge.

  • HI Ed:

It is not intended for that use, but technically, yes, it can be used to monitor a supercap capacitance, but it would need to not be charging at the time of the monitoring. The issue with this is that supercaps are typically in the range of F or mF, the FDC1004 can only handle up to 100pF.

I would look into the battery management products, they have supercap monitors specifically designed for that application.

  • Thank you David, I have suggested they use C=I dt/dV, measure the current in or out, measure the change in voltage over a time, and calculate C directly with their MCU.
