What is the process to calculate the series resistance of a coil?

Hello Taylor,
please have a look at the WEBENCH® Inductive Sensing tool on www.ti.com/.../inductive-sensing.page. It can be used to generate coils, and will show you series resistance and other parameters. Further information on using this tools is here: e2e.ti.com/.../inductive-sensing-five-minute-sensor-coil-design

If you already have a coil design and would like to calculate its series resistance, you can select WEBENCH® Coil Designer instead (also available from www.ti.com/.../inductive-sensing.page).

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the info. Let me clarify just a little bit further. I have a compression spring that I need to find the series resistance of. Is there some formula that will allow me to calculate the series resistance?

Hi Taylor,
the Inductive Sensing Design Calculator Tool on www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware contains a 'Spring sensor' tab which you may find useful. It does not calculate series resistance, but it calculates other parameters which are needed for spring compression applications.

You can calculate the length of the wire, and knowing its diameter, length and resistance, you can use AC resistance formula in the coil tool, calculate its resistance at AC frequencies
