TMP006 calibration

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP006

Hi,

I am trying to calibrate my TMP006 to measure the temperature a liquid contained in a plastic container. Measuring the temperature of the container is enough for now.

The TMP is behind a piece of protective, IR transmissive plastic for protection.

As recommended in the TMP007 Calibration Guide, I collected data at various object and die temperature across the range I'm interested in, and used fmin to find the optimal gains a1, a2, b0, b1, b2, c2, s0 for my application.

Unfortunately this I can't get good results using this approach. The estimated temperature is affected mostly by the die temperature, and not enough by the raw voltage.

Can you confirm (or not) that this approach is valid?

Valentin.

  • Hi Valentin,

The calibration approach is valid for TMP006 as it is for TMP007.

In addition to the calibration guide that you followed, there are other resources mentioned in this post, which may be helpful to you:

The problem seems to be that IR is not reaching TMP006. Please note that the protective plastic must allow IR transmission in the band (4 to 16 uM) that the device can detect. Maybe you can try experimenting without the protective plastic? As you know distance and FOV are also important factors to consider, which you experiment with as well.

  • Valentin,

I have a couple of quick questions that will help us figure this out.  What is the "IR transmissive plastic" you are using?  What is the distance from the device to the protective plastic, and what is the distance from the object to the die?  what is the color or surface finish of the plastic container?

  • Hello,

Thanks for your quick responses. I experimented without the cover today, and I observe the same phenomenon, the estimated temperature closely follows the die temperature.

The plastic container is 40mm tall, the TMP is vertically centered. The cover is ~0.5mm thick, 0.5mm from the TMP and 1.5mm from the container. So the distance TMP to object is ~2.5-3mm.

The container is clear polycarbonate or clear acrylic (2mm thick). The container is not always full.

The thermocouple is glued to the outside of the container (to what the TMP is pointed at), so measuring container temperature, not liquid temperature. Could it be that the TMP is receiving IR contribution mostly from the liquid, not from the container?

    Best,

    Valentin.

  • Can you send me a picture of the set up and data...  I need data in this format

Sensor output (uV)  ,   Local temp C (DieTemp) , Ref Object Temp
