Sensor s for Room occupancy to control the Lighting System.

Dear Team,

Few of customers evaluating PIR Sensors to monitor the Human presence in a room or Entrance of a Hall and controlling the Lighting Systems to save the energy.

Pls suggest which series of sensor will be best suitable from our sensors product range... Capacitive or temperature sensors... One of customer would like to have Analog output so that he want interface to Controller for further processing and controlling the lighting. And also would like to know the distance range of sensing our sensor products, particularly FDC Series. Request help on this data.

Prasadarao, Avnet.

  • Hi Prasadarao:

I work strictly with the FDC products, so I do not know much about the other sensors that would be suitable for this application. In terms of FDC, please read the application notes that are published on the product folder on the TI website. There is information about proximity sensing applications. Sensing distance is based on sensor size area. Depending on where the sensor is located, you would need to determine what sensing distance you need, and then figure out the sensor size. If you are looking for a long sensing range, the issue now becomes false detections. For capacitive sensing, you cannot distinguish between intended and unintended targets because it's based on size and location of the target, which is unpredictable. Other than the above, I would need to know more about the application and requirements to help you further.

    Thanks
