LDC1101 resolution in LHR Mode

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1614, LDC1314, LDC1101, LDC1612

Dear TI-Team!

I have designed a coil for the LDC1614 (28 Bit) with your Tool WEBENCH Designer with following data:
Distance: 0.6 cm
Diameter of Target: 5cm
Target material: Copper
Coil Footprint (cm²): 9,73
Coil Turns: 83
Coil Diameter (cm) : 3,52
Layers: 4
Distance Resolution: 0.0647 µm
Free Field Inductance: 1383,21 µH
Suggested External Capacitance: 18,31 pF
Free Field Frequency: 1 MHz

LDC1314 (12Bit) has with the same coil a distance resolution of 35,1068 µm.

Now i want to use the same Coil with the LDC1101 (24Bit) in LHR Mode.
What resolution do I get there?

Regards,
Jan

  • Hello Jan,

The LDC1614 and LDC1612 have a higher resolution and support a higher reference frequency than the LDC1101.

The measurement resolution of the LHR mode of the LDC1101 and the LDC161x devices are primarily a function of the RCOUNT setting - the higher the value of RCOUNT, the higher the measurement resolution, but the longer each conversion takes. If you have an RCOUNT less than 0x0100, then the conversion resolution for the LDC161x will not be any better than an LDC131x. You get the full resolution of the LDC161x devices when RCOUNT is 0xFFFF. The LDC1101 can also be set to an RCOUNT of 0xFFFF, and when it is configured in that way it will be ~0.5 to 1.5bits lower ENOB than the LDC161x.

In addition, I would recommend using a larger sensor capacitance - 220 pF or larger.

    Regards,
