i am going to do some testing with the FDC1004 with a parallel finger sensor. Does anyone have any guidelines in reguards to the distance between the sensing plate and the GND plate? I am not sure how small of a gap between plates is too small and how big of a gap is too big. Can anyone share some wisdom with me on this subject?

Hi Jed,

It depends on your sensor size and application. In general, a larger gap reduces the coupling between the sensor and ground. In the case of liquid level sensing, this would typically reduce the sensitivity.

Yibo,

Each plate is 2.7" long by .85" wide, where the coupling edge is along the 2.7" legnth. I am using it to sense different non grounded materials based on their dielectric constants in the field. I only need to go out to about 1.3" from the sensor. What would do think would be a good starting point for a gap between plates: .100", .05", .25",.......?

The gap does not have a clear-cut limit, but I think 0.1'' would be a good starting point.
