tdc1000-tdc7200evm no longer recognized at all by operating system

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000, TDC7200

Hello,

I attempted to upgrade the firmware and it failed (error stating it lost connection to the board).  Then in device manager, there was an error stating that the hardware was not responding.

Now When I plug the board into the PC (direct USB, no hub) the power LED on the board lights up, but not the link.  The PC doesn't do anything, as if the device was never connected.  The com port won't show up at all, no device at all in device manager (not even "MSP43-USB Example").

Is there a way to reset the board?  Any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks.

Justin

  • 1. Close all the MSP430 and/or TDC1000 GUIs.
    2. Connect EVM USB cable directly to computer USB port (no hubs).
    3. unplug USB cable from EVM
    4. While pressing SW1 on EVM plug, reconnect USB cable
    5. try to upgrade firmware again.

see this E2E post on the same issue:

    Best regards,

  • Thanks for the reply,

Unfortunately this didn't work.  For some reason the OS doesn't recognize that a device is connected at all, where it did before.

I am running Windows 10 however.  Do I *really* need to run this on Windows 7?

    thanks,

    Justin

  • I attempted this again but on a windows 7 Pro 32-bit machine. Similar problem. The device shows up as a "human interface device". Attempts to update the driver by pointing at C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\TDC1000_7200EVM\Firmware, does not fix the problem.
This board was working before I upgraded the TI software. Is it possible to download previous versions of the software? Do you think the device is now corrupt and I should get a new one?
    thanks.Justin
  • Justin,

Sorry to hear you're still having issues.

I'm not sure how to recreate your issue but I'd try the following steps:

    1. Uninstall the TDC1000-TDC7200 GUI via the control panel

    2. With EVM plugged in from the Device Manager find the MSP430 based driver your OS is responding to.

    3. Uninstall the MSP430 based driver (hover over it, right mouse click, select uninstall)

    4. Unplug the EVM

    5. reinstall the TDC1000-TDC7200 EVM GUI software.

    6. While continuously pressing SW1 on the EVM reconnect the USB cable to the EVM.

    7. While observing the DeviceManager release SW1.

7.It should show 2 additional line items

    7. Open the TDC1000-TDC7200 EVM GUI. It will say "BSL Entry failed" hit "OK" and go to the Debug tab anyway. See below:

    8. Select Update firmware now the previously documented way. Make sure you load the firmware from the following directory:C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\TDC1000_7200EVM\Firmware.

Once it finishes the window should look like this:

    9. Close the Firmware Upgrade Window, Close the TDC1000_TDC7200 GUI window.

    10. Disconnect and reconnect the EVM and Reopen Device Manager and confirm the TDC1000_7200 EVM was recognized (see below)

    11. Reopen TDC1000-7200 EVM GUI and it should look like this:

    Best regards,

  • Thanks.

    Couple things:

Couldn't do step three, because there is no MSP based driver found in device manager.

On step 6, pressing SW1 (and holding it) while plugging in the board doesn't do anything different than if the button is not pressed. The HID and USB devices still show up immediately in device manager.

If I attempt Step 7 anyway, when I click on the "update firmware" button, nothing happens. There is no error, no dialog that pops up, just a warning asking if I really want to upgrade the firmware, when I press "yes", that dialog just disappears.

    thanks.
  • May be the security settings of your PC is not allowing the firmware upgrade application to come up. You can access this application directly as explained below:

    a) In the following install folder

C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\TDC1000_7200EVM\MSP430 USB Firmware Upgrade Example

    there's an application called "BSL_USB_GUI.exe".

Please invoke this application and use it to upgrade the firmware.

    b) As Matt said, you should disconnect and reconnect the EVM while holding the SW1 button down so the MSP430 device is in BSL mode for firmware upgrade. You should see the "Found 1 device" message as shown in the screen capture below.

  • I have encountered the same problem as Justin. However, even using the method you proposed above, my firmware is unable to update properly and always either fails to read data from RAM BSL or has a memory verification error
  • Please check firmware upgrade instructions at the link below
