TDC1000-7200EVM for measuring solids such as Ice

I have been experimenting with the TDC1000-7200EVM for measuring ice thickness and believe that the 1 MHz transducer should sufficiently give me enough resolution to measure with fair accuracy. I am wondering though if I will need an extra gain stage before transmitting on the transducer to get a decent signal back.

I am also curious if anyone has set up the board with an external clock and what the required voltage inputs are to drive it effectively. Sorry if these questions are easy to answer for some, this is a first time project for me.

Thanks in advance
