Detecting and measuring phase shifts in waves

I am looking for a sensor or chip that detects or measures phase shifts in for optical and acoustical waves. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you,

Jed Martens

  • Dear Jed,

Could you please describe your application in greater detail? I am looking for specifics like, are you looking for a temporal phase variation? Is it an optical measurement or acoustic? Maybe your application enables us to do either?

  • It is can be either optical or acoustic. I am trying to measure the amount phase shift in a wave as it goes through mediums. I am looking at Birefringence.
  • Jed,

You would not be able to measure the phase of the electromagnetic light waves themselves. Our system measures the phase of amplitude modulated periodic light pulses.
One such way for you would be to use acousto-optic modulators. I am not aware of the specifics of your measurement. Using acousto optic modulators along with some transducers might bring the whole problem into our system's domain. Depending on what you need to actually measure, you might have to make use of other such esoteric technologies.
    Hope that helps.
