TDC1000 - detected object

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000

Hi all

Would you mind if we ask TDC1000?

Can TDC1000 detect  rain, snow or soft and springy object?
TDC1000 is the TOF, so it can detect the water.
As far as it is possible to reflect, we guess that TDC1000 can detect.

Kind regards,

Hirotaka Matsumoto

  • Matsumoto-san,

I need to understand what you mean by "detect"?
Also I really need more information on how you want to detect these items?

If you want to use ultrasound to find out anything about a substance you need an acoustic path for the "pressure wave" to propagate through. For instance if you want to use ultrasound to tell the difference between to "substances" then using a TOF measurement to determine speed of sound of each is one way.

In general to a "soft item" would not transmit ultrasound easly but it could absorb it. Therefore it could be "detected" it a setup where its presence would "block an echo".

So it could be possible to detect the difference between rain and snow by using 2 waterproof sensors pointing at each other in a "cup" where there would be 3 conditions to detect:

    1. Empty:   TOF measurement would show Csound aprrox 343m/s = air                                       results: dry
    2. Rain:     TOF measurement would show Csound approx 1480m/s = water                                results:rain
    3. Snow:    TOF measurement would show no echo as signal would be absorbed by snow          results:snow

However, the third case could have false positive if the signal was "blocked by something other than snow.
