Detect Fog or Mist

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HDC1000, HDC1080

Hi,

My question is quite  simple,

Is it possible for FDC to detect Fog or Mist in the air ?

  • Hi Saki,

It's likely possible that this would work, but it would depend on your setup. Condensation does cause a change in capacitance on the sensor, so this can be detected. But you would need a reference sensor that was shielded from the condensation so you would have something to compare it to. Additionally, the sensor would be sensitive to other things besides just condensation (like human touch), so your application would have to support letting the mist or fog in, but be shielded from (or not in contact with) interference.

We do have a few other products that might work as well. Our HDC1000 family is our humidity sensor which may be a great fit. You could also probably use an LED and photodiode pair to create a beam breaking system to detect thick fog/mist.

    Hope this helps!
    Nate

  • additionally, the HDC1080 is our newest humidity sensor and what we recommend as it has the best performance.
