PGA900 Without Having to Write Firmware

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA900, PGA309, PGA300

Hello,

I am interested in measuring the output of a bridge pressure sensor, however the electronics must be able to withstand operating at 150 deg C. We are using a high temperature MSP430, and originally we were going to use a PGA309. However, I haven't been able to find any high temperature EEPROM. This makes me think I should use the PGA900, especially since its output could be read over I2C from the MSP430 microcontroller we are using without requiring a separate high temperature ADC as would be necessary with the PGA309.

However, the idea of writing firmware for the PGA900 sounds like it would take a lot of time. I would really just like to be able to control the PGA900 over I2C and read data without having to write any firmware for it. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Hunter

  • Hi Hunter, there is a device we will be releasing in the next few months that has a fixed compensation algorithm already in it so there is no need for firmware development. All the device needs is to be calibrated and this is performed using One Wire Interface (OWI) over the VDD pin. However, this device only has analog outputs (voltage mode and 4-20mA), no digital outputs.  We should discuss this further. I will send you an e-mail with details.

    Thanks,

    JV

  • Great! I would really like to discuss this further. Please contact me whenever you can.

    Thanks!
  • Hello Javier, same as "Hunter". i´m also interested in having infos about this new and hopefully smaller Version of this CHIP.

Can you send me pls also some details.

    Thank you,

    Roland

  • Hi Roland,

The PGA300 will be a simpler solution intended for resistive bridge pressure sensors, and will only require calibration of the sensor/transmitter system and will not require firmware development.

A preview of the product is available at http://www.ti.com/product/pga300/description?keyMatch=pga300

This device will be released very soon (in about a month). Samples and EVMs will be available at that time.

  • Thanks Matthew,

your Info comes just in time. We are actually planing for a lowest cost pressure Gauge.

i have to create some pcb - prototypes asap.

Some Questions: Is the PGA300 pin compatible to PGA900 ?

    OWi Hardware-Programming the same as PGA900 ?

    lower current consumption ?

    Best regards Roland

  • Hi Roland,

The PGA300 and PGA900 share the same pinout for all functionally-similar pins. However, there are many features of the PGA900 (like I2C, SPI, SWD, Test Mux pins,  etc) that are not on the PGA300. So when it comes to pins like Vout, compensation pins for the output stage, Pressure and Temperature inputs, VDD, AVDD, DVDD, etc. those have the same pin location on both QFN-36 packages.

OWI functions in the same way on the PGA300, but comes with a more robust activation signal necessary to start OWI communication. OWI on the 300 allows you to set the device in various functional modes as well as write the algorithm compensation coefficients to the EEPROM.

Current consumption is very similar, about 2.5mA.

Please feel free to email me at m-sullivan@ti.com to discuss your new design some more! It sounds like our PGA parts are a great fit.

  • Hi JV

what your mean about the PGA900 does not have digital outputs. I am considering using this device in my project just because i think MCU can get the pressure sensor data from PGA900 through 12C or SPI bus, so i do not need design an extra ADC circuit.

    Thanks

  • Hi Stone,

The device JV was referring to above is the now-released PGA300. The device only allows communication over OWI (one-wire interface) for simple EEPROM and register reads/writes.

The PGA900 has I2C, SPI,  UART, and OWI for communication. You can use the communication buffer on the PGA900 and read the ADC output data as well as calibrated data from that register.

  • Stone,

    One other thing:

In a few months, we will be releasing a part very similar to the PGA300 with the algorithm already on the part, but will also have use of I2C and a communication buffer like the PGA900.
