LDC1000 detecting wood

We are using an LDC1000 with a 2" diameter coil to detect metal.  When a metal object is passed over the sensor (1/4" from PCB surface), the proximity output increases.  However, when a wood object is passed over the sensor, the proximity output decreases slightly (change is about 10x to 100x smaller than the change for metal).  This is useful for our application, but we were wondering why the output would change for wood?
