WEBENCH coil designer - formulas for inductance

Hi,

in the WEBENCH coil designer, the inductances of the user-defined coils are computed based on the geometry.

Is there any information available, which formulas are used for this computation, especially for multi-layer coils? Which distances between the layers are assumed for the computation?

Hello Andreas,

the equations very closely match those on the LDC tools spreadsheet: http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slyc137

In the "Select Coil Geometry And Other Parameter" screen in Webench, you may click on 'view more' to view and edit the layer spacing, as shown in the screenshot:

thank you for your reply, could you provide some information, where these equations are based on? Are those special estimation formulas for multilayer coils or are those based on experimental data?

they are mainly based on physics research papers, for example: web.stanford.edu/.../inductance_expressions.pdf

Hello Mr Kasemsadeh,

thank you for your replay, I'm especially interested in the formulas used to compute the mutual inductance between the layers in the "Self and Mutual Inductance Matrix" on the "Spiral Inductor Designer" spreadsheet, where are those factors based on?
