Mass-market application of ultrasonic level sensing

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000

I’m looking to develop a mass-produced consumer product that can externally measure the fill level of a tank using your ultrasound technology. There are a couple of criteria the product would have to meet to be successful.
1) The ultrasound would have to penetrate steel of about 5mm thickness and measure a fill level varying from about 2cm to about 50cm.
2) It should be possible to measure the fill level of different tanks with the same product without too much difficulty, i.e. the transducer isn’t adhered to the tank.
Do you think your TDC1000 component could be suitable for this application?
Thank you
  • We will come back to you on this. Thanks, Vishy
  • 1) For ultrasonic energy to penetrate 5mm thick steel, you will need to use higher transducer excitation voltage (see TDC1000GASEVM).
    2) If transducer isn't adhered to the tank, then ultrasound has to go through multiple mediums (possibly air, steel, liquid and back). To see any echo this can demand very high excitation voltage. This is something you have to experiment and see if this technology would work for your application.
    thanks,
    Vishy
  • Thank you for the reply. That sounds like it could be promising. We are looking at developing a product using ultrasound technology that would be ready for sale in the next 2-3 years and would sell 10^4-10^5 units per year. Is there someone that you could refer me to that I could discuss a development route with? We're looking for a potential partner that could help with product development and manufacturing.
    Thanks,
    Callum
