clamp-on Ultrasonic water flow meter

I am in the process of designing a clamp-on Ultrasonic water flow meter for my second year project at the university. The water pipe size is between 12-15 mm and made up of copper or plastic. Could you please advise for the sensor type and micro controller? Does an Arduino unit do the job?
