Detecting defects of Steel Target moving at High Speed

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1101

I have an application where the target is moving at over 50 m/s and the material is steel.

Is it possible to use the LDC1101 sensor to check for defects with mm depth/width on a surface that has an otherwise smooth profile.

  • Hello Krithik,
Yes it is possible to use the LDC1101 to check for uneven steel surfaces. A defect would either expose the sensor coil to more or to less metal, which would cause either a negative or a positive spike in the output. The LDC1101 has a sample rate of up to 180ksps. From the chosen sample rate, it is possible to calculate the minimum size of a defect at 50m/s before it would get missed.
