Hello,

I was hoping to find a product or set of products that are capable of sensing speed and direction of a rotating object. I am not looking for a specific technology, only that it can meet my requirements. However, I am looking for the sensor and the object it will be tracking (for instance, a hall effect sensor and the magnet disk being sensed, or a inductive sensor and the gear with the teeth being sensed). I tried contacting the chat on the website who instructed me to contact semiconductor customer support who instructed me to contact the forum.

I prefer a sensor with:

Two channels at a 90 degree phase shift and a 50% duty cycle
A speed range of 0-15000 rpm and 32 to 80 pulses per revolution
A unit width of 6.2mm and a shaft diameter of the disk of 15mm to 45mm.

These are the specs I am looking for, but please show me any available options.

Hello Wisam,

generally, the LDC can be used for gear tooth counting. A typical application for speed and direction would involve two LDC0851 switches. An example is here: http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00851-LDC0851.

However, as your system is proposed with 32 to 80 pulses per revolution, the LDC0851 and our other LDCs would not meet your speed requirements. Section 9.2.1.2 of the LDC0851 datasheet explains the maximum speed limitations: http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/ldc0851.pdf . For example, a gear with 8 teeth and sensor frequency of 15MHz could reliably measure a gear rotational speed of 6500 rpm. To measure 15000rpm, it would therefore be necessary to reduce the events per revolution to three or four (evenly spaced), so instead of measuring the teeth directly, a different part of the mechanism would have to be measured.

Thank you for your reply, I will look into this product and see if it will in my application. I am also going to post in the hall effect forum to see if they have any products that may better fit my requirements.
