LDC1612EVM: LDC target design : Magnetic steel's response not as expected

Part Number: LDC1612EVM

Hello all,

This is in reference to the application report SNOA957 : LDC Target Design, Pg No. 10.

We are not getting an increase in frequency when the target is made of SS416, with the coil is resonating at 300 kHz. Are there any other materials with similar properties to SS416 ie. positive inductance shift below a frequency and negative inductance shift above it. Would any other magnetic steel suffice?

Regards,

SreejitS

  • Hello Sreejit,

You're observing a phenomenon that has to do with materials containing a high permeability, which causes an increase in inductance. The eddy currents formed on the surface of the material cause a decrease in inductance. Depending on the frequency of oscillation, one effect may be stronger than the other as seen in the figure below.

If you use other materials with high permeability, the effect will be similar.

You can find more information in the LDC Target Design application note: http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/snoa957
