A professor ask,

" We bought a TDC1000-TDC7200 EVM board from ti store. Our students are doing a project to measure the water flow. We received a transducer along with the board. We don't have any description and I assume it's a 40 KHz transducer. I read on your website that we need higher frequency ultrasonic transducers (4 to 5 MHz). Moreover, we wish to buy a non-intrusive type, i.e. to clamp on a PVC pipe. We are searching for suitable sensors and from the companies recommended by TI, such transducers are not available. So guide us in getting the ultrasonic transducers matched to ti EVM board."

Can anyone help me with this question please?

Hello Kaustubh,

The transducer included in the TDC1000-TDC7200EVM is a Steminc 15mm 1Mhz transducer as described in the User's guide: www.ti.com/.../sniu021a.pdf

This will work for flow metering, although a housing will need to be designed. Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters do exist, but these are generally part of a completed product and the transducers and housing are not available separately. Please see the Ultrasonic transducer selector tool to find some recommended transducers for this application: www.ti.com/.../ultrasonic-sensing-tools-software.page

Audiowell produces some ultrasonic flow meter pipes that are proven designs.

Thank you for answering my question. Somewhere i read that the sensor has to be placed intrusively. we are looking for non-intrusive type. can you please clarify this.

please also suggest me whether i can go with high frequency sensors available from Stemnic (compatible with TDC1000-TDC7200 EVM board).

Hello,

I am not aware of an existing non-intrusive flow meter housing that is not already part of a completed product. If you wish to use your own transducers, you will have to design the non-intrusive housing.

Here is a link to the Steminc transducer included with the EVM: https://www.steminc.com/PZT/en/piezo-ceramic-disc-1-mhz . It should be suitable for this application.
