CCS/MMWAVE-DEVPACK: FMCW RADAR - mmWave

Hi,

What is the difference between millimeter-wave FMCW radars and other radars(for example K band vs. W-band in FMCW mode)?

We know that increasing the frequency shrinks the size of the antenna and size of radar.

If we increase the bandwidth, then we have greater range resolution.

My question is why we increase bandwidth at high frequencies?

In other words, what is the difference between the two case FMCW radars with equal bandwidth?, for example:

case1:

K-band radar and BW=4GHz

case2:

W-band radar and BW=4GHz

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Amin

  • Hello Amin,
As you mentioned, using higher frequency allows smaller antenna.
Interms of the the bandwidth , if you could get a 4Ghz BW at a lower frequency the range resolution would be same whether you use lower RF frequency or higher RF frequency. But due to regulations some of the bands do not allow usage of a wider bandwidth. For example in the 24Ghz band the allowed bandwidth by FCC is 23.6 - 24Ghz only. The 77Ghz band allows operation of full 4Ghz band.
