TDC7200: tdc7200 maximum range

Hii,

Now I am working in a project where time of flight measurement is required. I have studied tdc7200 datasheet its range is 12ns to 500 ns. I thought it can measure this but after calculating the total time i found that it will be more then 20 microseconds (20000 ns). Means like tdc7200 time should be calculated in ns and upto 20000ns or more. I not found any device in this range till now. Is there any device to measure time in this range.

Hello,

The TDC7200 has 2 modes of operation. Mode 1 has a range of 12ns to 500ns, while Mode 2 has a range of about 250ns to 8ms. This is shown in the features section of the datasheet, and discussed in detail in section 8.4 (Device Functional Modes). www.ti.com/.../tdc7200.pdf

Hi,

Yes, Its range is 250 ns to 8 ms so it can't measure below 250 ns. But i need the range what tdc7201 has in combined mode operation. But I can't use that because it can't be hand soldered. So please tell me that by using tdc7200 can can i achieve that range. Or any other device is there in this range.

Hi Pabel,

The TDC7200 can be used down to the 0.25ns range offered by the TDC7201 if you use two TDC7200s. There is a TI reference design that uses them in this way: www.ti.com/.../TIDA-00663

This reference design is for LIDAR solutions. The AFE portion may or may not be necessary for your application, but the TDC7200 timing portion will measure down to 0.25ns.
