AWR1642: Different phase noise for IF signal in radar studio and the mmw demo in SDK 1.0

Part Number: AWR1642

Hi,

With the below setup, test on AWR1642 EVM.

start frequency=77GHz,

slop=0 MHZ/us

Rx input is connected to a mixer at 73.6GHz, the expected IF frequency is 77-73.6=3.4GHz

My customer tested in two methods, below figure 1 show the test result in radar studio 0.6.1.1, the signal is very good; figure 2 show the result in mmw demo SDK 1.0, the result is very bad. Compared the below two figures we can find in the figure2 IF signal the phase noise is bigger, and there is one strange band signal label with red circle. Could u pls help give any comments on what would impact the signal quality?

Suggest u can test it at your side just use the mmw demo in SDK 1.0 on awr1642 EVM, set slop=0 to get the IF signal.

Figure1 Result in Radar studio

Figure2 Result in mmw demo SDK 1.0

  • Hello Andy,
Inorder to transmit a fixed frequency tone on the TX the device needs to be put in the continuous mode . In the Radar studio context this is done my using the "contstream" tab and in the SDK context you need to use the "dfeoutputMode" API to configure the device in continuous mode.

  • Vivek,

I think through set slop=0 is also fine to do the test, it can get the fixed frequency signal. My query is that the test result is difference in radar studio and mmw demo with the same method to set slop=0, and the phase noise in demo is very high, it is very strange.

  • Hello Andy,
For radar studio slope 0 may work but in SDK context it cause an issue. I suspect it might actually end up sweeping a small bandwidth. We would recommend using the continuous mode for single tone testing.

  • Hello Vivek,

could you tell me how to use the "dfeoutputMode" API to configure the device in continuous mode?

does it mean the continuous wave mode can be set by the configuration file? i try to modify the "dfeDataOutputMode "value to "2-continuous chirping" of the config file ,but it sames need more definition of the value.

    Regards,

    Duan

  • Hello Duan,
Looks like the present SDK release (v01.00.00.05) has an issue with the continuous mode operation. The bug would be fixed in the next release. Meanwhile can you use radar studio tool if you want to a continuous CW transmission? This is part of the DFP package (www.ti.com/.../mmwave-dfp). For using this tool you would need the mmwave devpack board as well.

Thank you for reply. Actually i had try the constant streaming mode by the radar studio , but what i need is a method can operated only AWR1642 board. By using the mmwave depack and radar studio tool , it need resend the configuration value If power off the board .

Is it impossible for operating the AWR1642 work in continuous wave mode without a devpack board recently?
  • Hello Duan,
This would be possible in our next SDK release. Please look for the update on the product webpage.
