AWR1642: Power estimation tool and power question

Part Number: AWR1642
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642

Hi,

I don't find the power estimation spreadsheet for AWR1642, but there is one for IWR1642, can it also be used for AWR1642?

My customer measured their board power consumption can be up to 7w with below configuration, the AWR1642 surface temperature would be very high after running some time, they use the LP87524 for power control. Is their board power consumption normal?

1Tx, 4Rx

frame period=50ms

chirp period=30us

chirp number=512

adc samples=64

Andy

  • Hello Andy,
yes you can use the IWR1642 power estimation sheet for reference.
Is the 7W number average power or is it the peak power they are seeing?

    Regards,
    Vivek
  • Vivek,

Update some power measure result based on the below configuration, the board average power consumption is about 3.43w, and the AWR1642 chip surface is too hot to touch. With the same configuration test on EVM, the AWR1642 surface is also too hot to touch. My customer has great concern on the chip too hot issue, would u pls help check why the surface is too hot and how to solve it?

2Tx enable but with only one for signal transmission, 4Rx

    frame period=50ms

chirp period=27us (idle time = 5us, adc valid start time=2us, ramp end time=22us)

    chirp number=512

    adc samples=64
    adc sampling rate=10Msps

About the adc sampling rate, the valid should be less than 6.25Msps for complex format, when it is configured as 6Msps, it is also very hot and the power consumption is not reduced.

    Andy
  • Hello Andy,
The device can handle a junction temperature of 125 deg C , so till that point it should not be an issue.
If you want to reduce the temperature further , you can use some external heat sinks or reduce the duty cycle further.
