IWR1443BOOST: Azimuth reduction

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443

Hello
I have a customer who is looking to evaluate the IWR1443 with the booster pack.

Ideally they would like to have a small angle of operation and the smallest Azimuth Resolution setting on the mmWave Demo Visualiser is 15 deg.

Is there anything they could use to reduce this to around 12 deg ?

What does the Azimuth Resolution setting actually do as I would have thought this was related to antenna design, lens used, etc..

Many Thanks
Bob Bacon

  • Hello Bob,
The azimuth resolution primarily depends on the effective receiver channels available in the system. You can refer to the app note www.ti.com/.../swra553 to understand better how the angular resolution is impacted based on the number of RX and Tx channels used.

With 4Rx and 3 TX you could achieve an angular resolution as low as 9.5deg , if you do not care about the elevation resolution.

    Regards,
    Vivek
  • Hi Bob,

Did the application note that Vivek posted address your problem?

I believe the equation (8) is exactly what you needed. This shows how angular resolution is a function of wavelength, distance between antenna, number of RX antenna, number of TX antenna and the angular displacement of the target itself.

As far as the demo visualizer, the azimuth resolution drop-down menu simply selects the number of transmitters and receivers currently active on the EVM. As shown by equation (8), as you increase the number of TX and RX antenna that are used for the angular estimation, the angular resolution gets smaller. Also, as you increase the distance and as the target comes closer to bore-sight to the sensor (0 degree azimuth in your case).

The demo visualizer sets up the following options:

Azimuth Resolution Number of RX Antenna Number of TX Antenna
    15 4 2
    30 4 1
    60 (2 RX) 2 1
    60 (1 RX) 1 1

In the case of the EVM, the resolution is limited to the number of TX and RX antenna and their spacing. The 9.5 degree minimum that Vivek quoted can be derived as follows:

Please let us know if this solves your problem.

    Thank you,

    Randy

  • Hi Bob,

I haven't seen any response on this thread in a few days. Did we answer all of your questions?

    Thank you,
    Randy
  • Hi Bob,

Thank you for the reply by e-mail. Closing this thread now.

  • Hi Randy,

I have a similiar question. On my AWR1443EVM, there is only one Tx and Rx antennas are enabled through code/algrithm although the total availible TX and RX antennas are 3 and 4 respectively. I don't quite understand why are all these antennas are enabled originally. Wouldn't it be the best for users if they can put all the availible antennas into their applications? I know there is only 1 Rx Antenna is enabled because in the data_path.h file line 86ish, it commented that " // The current vital signs demo only uses from a single RX channel. This variable specifies the RX-channel to use for processing."
I'm also wondering what are the means to enable the 2 TX-azimuth antennas and all of the 4 Rx antennas.

    thank you so much,

    Zhengguo Sun
  • Hi Zhengguo,

As we have discussed in similar threads, using more Tx and Rx Antenna will enable greater angular resolution and is more suitable for scenes with many objects. The vital signs demo is only focusing on a person's chest to compute heart rate and respiratory information so the addition of more antenna here would be superfluous.

I'm going to close this thread right now but feel free to open up a new one!

    Cheers,
    Akash
