AWR1243: Question on using radar studio to control AWR1243 CSI output on customer's board

Part Number: AWR1243

Hi,

My customer wants to use radar studio to configure AWR1243 on own board to verify the radar chip works or not.

In radar studio, it needs to connect UART and SPI. I think UART is to use download the firmware and SPI is using to send the radar command. Right?

1. On customer's board, customer connects the UART pin of AWR1243 (N6/N5) to external RS232 chip directly and then connect to PC with serial cable. For SPI, customer fly-wires the SPI signal on own board to dev pack board and connect the usb cable with Dev pack and PC. Are these HW connection enough for using radar studio?

2. Customer set the SOP to 010 by HW pull-up/pull-down. Can customer skip the SOP setting in radar studio?

Any other things customer need to take care for this use case?

Thanks,

  • Hello Chris,
The radar studio tool looks for the FTDI device, so would recommend to use the dev pack only for all the connections. I would suggest they wire the UART lines also to the dev pack instead of using a external RS232 chip.
Along with the UART and SPI lines, the HOST_IRQ line is also required to be connected to the FTDI chip of the dev pack. It would be easier to also use the SOP and nRST lines from the dev pack itself.

    Regards,
    Vivek
  • Vivek,

The uart port used in radar studio is from the boost board. Why we need to connect the uart port to dev pack? Is it because to use the FTDI chip on dev pack to convert uart to usb?

    Thanks,
  • Hello Chris,
You are right, you need not connect the RS232 lines to the Devpack. You could use the FTDI on the devpack also for the UART connection , portC of the FTDI can be used for that.
But coming back to your original query, you can connect only the SPI and HOST_INTR lines to the dev pack and have a separate RS232 if thats easy for the customer (it should be at 3.3V IO level). Even if you have not connected the SOP and nRST lines to the FTDI, do click on the set SOP button on the Radar Studio while you make sure the SOP is set properly on the board.
If you are loading the firmware also from the radar studio then you need to use SOP 011.

  • Vivek,

Customer has connected SPI_CS,   SPI_MISO, SPI_MOSI, SPI_CLK,  SPI_HOST_INTR, GND from own board to dev pack. After downloading the firmware and click SPI connect button, customer got below error. Would you pls kindly advise what may cause below error?

We also found if no board is connected to PC and we open radar studio, then click SPI connect button we will see same error.

  • Hello Chris,
If the FTDI device is detected properly , on the top right corner of the radar studio you should see the "No. of Devices Detected: 1" and FTDI status connected. Do you see that?
If that is happening , you should click on SOP set and RS232 connect , download the firmware , before you do SPI connect.

    Regards,
    Vivek
