LDC2114: Application Issue About LDC2114

Part Number: LDC2114
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2212, FDC2214

Hi teams

My customer is finding a low cos proximity sensing solution and I am try to use LDC2114 as a capacitive sensor to achieve this and have several application issue:

  1. In other LDC parts with external clock the DataN=fsensor/fclock, but LDC2114 don't need external clock. I want to know the relationship between fsensor and DataN.
  2. How to calculate the sensor metal pad size according to my sensing range? (The relationship between sensing distance and sensor size?)
  3. If the size of sensor is limited by PCB space, is there any way to reduce the sensor size through changing the LC tank parameter? Will this way has some side effect on resolution?

  • Hi Gabriel,

The LDC2114 employs baseline tracking and hence only provides information about the changes in the sensor frequency/inductance and not the sensor frequency/inductance itself.

You can use the Webench Capacitive sensor designer tools on the FDC2212 / FDC2214 product pages to figure out the metal pad size. This app note gives you more information about sensor size and sensitivity.

    Regards,

    Varn.
