IWR1642BOOST: mmWave Demo Freezes using Heat Map

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642, IWR1443

Hello
I visited a customer yesterday who was having problems with the IWR1642 Boost + mmWave Demo Visualiser - both with Online and Offline versions.

When they selected the heat map and hit Send Config to mmWave device, it appears to transmit OK (according to Console) but when you check the Plots screen it appears to be frozen. If we then try and send further commands nothing happens (blank console window).

This also occurs if you try and change several parameters at the same time but this isn't as repeatable as selecting the heat map.
I have also managed to repeat this on my own board but w
hat I can do is select the heat map (making sure fps < 5 or I get a warning) and the other settings I require, then save config to file. If I then use the “Load Config from PC and Send” option on the Plots tab it appears to work OK.

Is this a known issue - if so is there a better workaround for it ?

Thanks
Bob Bacon

  • Hi Bob,

Can you please confirm the followoing:
Frame rate is set to Minimum
PC performance is set to high allowing best speed.

    Thank you,
    Vaibhav
  • Hello Vaibhav
I set the Frame Rate to 4 as initially error message requested a setting <5
I just tried min setting of 1 and it appears to work OK.
I then tried 2, which was OK but at 3 it froze again

    Hello Bob,

For the heat map, if you hover over the options the text box that pops up specifies that FPS should be set to 1 FPS for the functionality to work. It seems FPS greater than 1 isn't officially supported. The warning should be updated.

I wasn't able to replicate the freezing after changing multiple parameters issue. Did you only observe this issue after heatmap/fps issues? If yes, the user guide does mention that if the EVM intentionally halts due to FPS/heat map issues than a board reboot is required after.

    Thanks,
    Amanda
  • Hello Amanda
I can confirm that both my customer and myself have issues when changing multiple settings but the problem is that its difficult to recreate and we haven't managed to find a combination of settings that fails consistently (apart from selecting heat map).
Reboot always solves problem and I find best way is to set a config then save it to file so it can be re-loaded easily.
I think we can close this thread now.
    Thanks

  • Hi Bob,

Can you please check if the Data port  (com#) is receiving data  after the config sent.

This might help us isolate if the issue is with the device sending out data vs the Gui/visualizer not being able to keep up with the data.

    Thank you,

    Vaibhav

  • Hello Vaibhav
Here's what I did to check this.

    1. Configured using default options 10 fps, with scatter plot, range profile and Statistics
This worked OK, so I closed the mmWave visualiser and using a TeraTerm I could see data on the Dataport.

    2. Configured for 1 fps and enabled the heat map.
Again this worked OK and using a TeraTerm I could still see data on the Dataport.

    2. Configured for 10 fps and enabled the heat map.
As expected this stopped working an checking with TeraTerm I could no longer see data on the Dataport.

NOTE: Once this happens I have to perform a power on reset of the board, I cannot get it working by just restarting the software.

p.s. I had to do this on an IWR1443 evm as I have loaned my IWR1642 to a customer.

    I hope this helps

    Regards
