IWR1443BOOST: IWR1443, Presence Sensor

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443

Hello,

I would like design presence sensor with mmWave IWR1443 on the a steel silo.

the sensor is planning to mounted out of the  silo to detect grain presence into silo. (The steel silo thickness is 4mm)

Q1: Can I apply mmWave as presence sensor out of the metal silo to detect grain into silo?

Q2: Could the signal effected metal silo thickness? (I just confuse that can the signal detect meterial/things behind the 4mm metal thickness?)

All the best,

Mehmet

  • Hello Mehmet,

For your questions, do you mean you want the IWR1443 to detect grain on the inside of the silo while it is positioned on the outside?  If so, I would recommend that you take a look at this experiment:

mmWave sensors are able to see through walls of various types, metal being one of them.  Since grain up against the inside of the wall is not really an object to be detected (as in the experiment above where the distance to hidden objects are measured), you would be using the sensor as more of a "stud detector", where instead you would be looking for changes in the density of the wall.  We have not run an experiment of this kind yet, so it would take some playing with the device to see how it behaves (and what is returned) for your environment.

Do you care about the level of the grain in the silo? Perhaps a simpler (and more accurate) use of the device would be to mount the sensor at the top of the inside of the silo and use it to measure the height of the grain with respect to ground/floor level. There is a TI Design that addresses this:
