LDC1612: Oscillator Frequency Variation for Metal Discrimination

Part Number: LDC1612
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1101, LDC1101EVM

Its been a few years since I experimented with the LDC1000, now I purchased the LDC1612 EVM to see how things may have changed.  The first thing I see is that the older GUI for the LDC1000 doesn't install on my W10 machine (and I'm supposed to use the new GUI for it).  When I had it running in the past I was somehow playing with oscillator frequency and was able to see metal discrimination as a result.  I can't see how to do this with the LDC1612 though - although specified for a wide frequency range it is not obvious to me what to change to control oscillator frequency.  Can you give me some tips on how I may differentiate metals using this kit?  Also is there a user manual for the GUI application somewhere?  Sometimes there are hidden features that could be useful.  On the LDC1000 GUI you could use the mouse to zoom in on the realtime waveform to get higher resolution.  The LDC1612 has autoscale/lock options but what if I just want to set the scaling (high) manually so I can sense things from long distances?
