TDC1000-TDC7200EVM: Selection of transducers.

Part Number: TDC1000-TDC7200EVM

Hello,

I am working on flow measurement for water. There are certain issues Im facing. I have Steminic transducers (ones given as samples) and some samples from alibaba for flow measurement. The confiuration is that I am just keeping these transudcers in air and moving them so that I can detect signals.

1. In Mode 0 both these transducers are working but what I have noticed is for the same configuration at COMPIN the alibaba transducer has lower peaks.

2.In Mode 1 and 2 (which require 2 transducers to work with), I can detect signals if both transducers are Steminic but not with my transducers.

3. In Mode 1 and 2 if I remove one of the Steminic transducer then also the TOF measurements goes on. Dies it go back to Mode 0 if 2 transducers are not detected.

4. As soon I replace with my transducer in Mode 1 and 2 the TOF measurement stops and as i replace with Steminic it starts.

5. How do I choose transducers. I have read somewhere that the sample transducers are not good for flow measurement . Why so? Whats makes a transducer a good transducer to work with?

Regards,

Prudhvi Sagar

  • Hello Prudhvi,

The transducers you are using are designed for use in fluid measurement, and will have poor performance in the air, and most likely you will not be able to get the signal to noise ratio required to generate a proper STOP signal in the TDC1000 due to the extreme attenuation of these higher frequencies in air. I suggest that you perform any further testing in water. I think many of your problems will be solved by using these transducers in water.

For selecting transducers, generally a slightly higher frequency is desired for flow metering. However, the 1Mhz transducers you have will work, but with slightly lower resolution compared to a higher frequency transducer for flow metering. If this is acceptable for your system, the transducers you have will work fine.

This application note discusses flow metering with the TDC1000 and also has suggestions for transducers to use in this application: www.ti.com/.../snia020.pdf

  • Hello Scott,

Thanks for your help. I don't have a full pipe setup yet. I guess I can try it on a plastic bottle for now. Do you think that configuration can help.

I have one of the transducers which I received today which are mentioned in the document. The PSC.01M0200H2AD0 which are 1MHz and they seem to have lowest signals compared to other 2 at COMPIN.

How does the board work in Mode 2 with even one transducer, that part I'm unable to understand.
