OPT8241: Information about 3D ToF Sensors

Part Number: OPT8241
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPT9221

Hi Guys,

I'm new to ToF sensors and would like to know more about these sensors and development options.

1. For developing our own a camera, do we need both OPT8241 sensor and OPT9221 controller ?

2. Does Camera Development Kit has both OPT8241 and OPT9221 inbuilt ?

3. Is it possible to develop a camera without TI's CDK ?

4. Can we develop a product just using these sensor and controller ? or any dependencies are there?

5. Is TI's third party design partners are using only CDK for development ?

6. Do we need to use only Qt5 framework SDK for development ? Does this supports C++, C, C# ?

7. Does this SDK supports Windows, Ubuntu ? And Android , iOS ?

8. How good these sensors for under water depth capture ?

9. Any of your third party partners already has solution for under water depth capture with your sensors ?

10. If yes, how much depth it can get clear images ?

  • 1. For developing our own a camera, do we need both OPT8241 sensor and OPT9221 controller ?

    >> Generally, yes.

    2. Does Camera Development Kit has both OPT8241 and OPT9221 inbuilt ?

    >> Yes

    3. Is it possible to develop a camera without TI's CDK ?

    >> Yes, but it serves good starting point for your own design.

    4. Can we develop a product just using these sensor and controller ? or any dependencies are there?

    >> Depth data coming out of our devices needs to be used somehow. that require application logic running elsewhere, usually your own microprocessor.

    5. Is TI's third party design partners are using only CDK for development ?

    >> Most use CDK as a starting point, but they may have other tools.

    6. Do we need to use only Qt5 framework SDK for development ? Does this supports C++, C, C# ?

    >> Voxel SDK does not require Qt5, but Qt is often used together with Voxel SDK for development in C/C++ and Python.

    7. Does this SDK supports Windows, Ubuntu ? And Android , iOS ?

    >> Windows, Ubuntu are supported by TI. Other customers/partners have ported to Android and iOS.

    8. How good these sensors for under water depth capture ?

    >> As-is today, no, as they are only sensitive to 850nm wave length. If operating in "green" spectrum, it may work fine.

    9. Any of your third party partners already has solution for under water depth capture with your sensors ?

    >> No.

    10. If yes, how much depth it can get clear images ?

    >> No data.
