IWR1642BOOST: Noise Floor

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642

The noise floor is fairly high with no targets present. This represents the sensor looking only into radar absorbing foam at all angles.

There are a lot of near field peaks, and then some 5m peaks.

This is the same plot zoomed in. One thing to note here is that the highest speed bin interpretation of the noise floor sets an artificial noise floor. It might be the electrical noise limit, but it does not take into account noise in the radar mixer that doesn’t have any dopplar shift.

If we want to detect a weak target from 1.5 to 8 meters, it must have amplitude above 4k, so we don’t confuse it with false noise targets that might have 3k amplitude. To detect a weak target inside of 1.5m, it must have even higher amplitude to bust above the DC sync.

What is the explanation for this high noise floor?

Thanks,
Mark

Using the visualizer for the Noise Floor (which is a checkbox) it may be green in your graph.  There are reflections detected in your radar scene.

We need to start with which configuration you are using, there is both a high DC component, and several low frequency returns within 1 meter.

In the attached zip file, I have used mmwave SDK 1.01, Visualizer 1.01, a IWR1642 EVM, a .5RCS target at 10ft.    There are pictures, and configuration files in the zip attachment.

The DC removal is helps remove my near DC magnitude.   You can adjust HPF1, HPF2, and the DC filter to desensitize close in interference.   In the FFT

of range, you can also zero the output bins.
