PGA460: Blindzone reduction

Part Number: PGA460

I am using PGA460 with Arduino for distance measurement in air and i am getting the correct output, but the only problem i am facing is the blind zone . I am getting the blind zone of about 20inches and i want to reduce it to about 5inches. So please help me to reduce the blind zone. I am using single transducer with PGA460.

  • Hi Chethan,
Depending on the specific transducer part number and driver mode (transformer or direct), you can reduce the blind zone duration to enable object detection down to 5in. I discuss how the matching circuit's tuning capacitor and damping resistor are used to minimize the blind zone in the PGA460 Ultrasonic Module Hardware and Software Optimization AppNote ( www.ti.com/.../slaa732.pdf ) section "3.4 Passive Tuning".

It is more difficult to reduce blindzone duration in the direct driver mode since the damping resistor is the only tunable value available to the user. The transformer drive offers tuning of the transformer's secondary inductance and matching resonant capacitor in addition to the damping resistor. I recommend that you use a transformer driver to best enable 5in minimum detection. As a working example, the transformer driver circuit components and closed-top transducer on the PGA460 EVM daughtercard can detect downwards of 5in.
