IWR1642BOOST: mmWave for human detection in short and long ranges

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443, IWR1642

Hi,

I want to get advice on which mmWave EVM is more suitable to this application, IWR1443 and IWR1642, are looking very close.

I want to detect radial position of human(s) near heavy equipment in reasonable accuracy (safety issue), speed would be a bonus

short range is to 20m, long rang is up to 60m.

Another issue is how to make omni-directional antenna for 360 detection, or shall I need to use multiple sensor in that case?

Is there any reference on how radar beam would look like with current PCB antenna?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Sameh,

I'd recommend looking at the new People Counting Demo on the TI Resource Explorer: dev.ti.com/.../

An omni-directional antenna would be part of your final antenna design but isn't absolutely necessary for this application is demonstrated in the People Counting Demo. Strategic placement of the sensor should be able to map around your detection areas of interest.

Current antenna design on IWR1642 BOOST has field of view of +/- 60 degrees (so 120 degrees in total) but this can be improved with a custom antenna design.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Cheers,
    Akash
