IWR1642BOOST: Elevation field of view

Hi,

What is the field of view of the IWR1642Boost? I can see in the mmWave Demo that the azimuth angle resolution depends on the number of tx and rx antennas. But what about the field of view in elevation. I imagine that an object in front of the sensor can be detected, even if the object is not on the same hight as the radar. Can I assume that objects within a 30° opening angle (elevation) will be detected as well as the ones strait in front?

  • Hi Ryen,

    There is no elevation field of view on the IWR1642BOOST since there is no Tx "elevation antenna" as there is on IWR1443BOOST (Tx 2). This is only a limitation of the board however, elevation detection is definitely possible for the IWR1443 device itself. This will just depend on your final antenna design.

    If you want to observe the elevation field of view on a BoosterPack I'd recommend ordering an IWR1443BOOST.

    Thanks for your reply. I understand that it is not possible to resolve two objects with different elevation approach angle when using the IWR1642BOOST module. However, during some tests, I did experienced  that when mounting the radar pointing slightly towards the sky and moving objects towards the sensor  using a motion that is parallel to the ground, the sensor still detects the object. Do you have an idea how steep the "elevation approach angle" can be for an object to still be detected?

  • Hi Ryen,

    The IWR1642BOOST EVM has an elevation FOV of about +/- 15 degrees so a total of about 30 degrees (based on 6 dB drop in the gain as compared to bore sight). You can refer to the antenna pattern plot in section 2.6 of the IWR1642BOOST user guide.
