Is it feasible to replace the diffuser in the laser diodes to have a narrower beam and higher range?

There are anamorphic lenses that convert the elliptic beam into a circular one and collimators that produce an almost straight (divergence nearly zero) beam, but what I'd like is to have a specific divergence (say, 45°)

Using diffusers or lenses to shape the illumination profile are fine as long as the sensor's FOV are well-illuminated, and also eye safety considerations are taken into account. Usually narrower beam is less eye-safe.

Yes, the narrower the beam the more power density. In my case I can get away with just a fraction of the FoV illuminated, I'm after a decent range (5+ m) outdoors, I need quite a lot of power, one way to achieve that is to reduce the beam divergence. Eventually we might design for the right FoV and the necessary power.

As FYI, we have outdoor robotics customer using our ToF solution detecting obstacle 6 m away.

An additional problem I have is that our environment is below the average reflectance. I learnt recently it hugely impacts the working range.
