IWR1642BOOST: Reading the UART part without USB

Hi,

I have brought a IWR1642 BOOST EVM for vehicle detection. I tried the mmWave Visualiser and was able to detect the desired objects in the X-Y plot and the doppler plot.

I would like to now get the data of the detected objects using a microcontroller. I know the EVM has a UART port but i see no data coming out of it ( used an osciloscope to check) even when the Visualiser is running.

What is the best way to interface with a microcontroller which has no USB port to read the data from.

Hi Anup,

Can you confirm which pin you are probing with oscilloscope?

Hi Anup,

You can use PIN5 and PIN7 in J6 connector.

But the R166 and R169 is disconnected, you should connected these 2 resistance, then disconnect the R128 and R129 on EVM.

I am probing on the the J6 header pins 5 (Tx) and pin 7 (Rx).

1. First I connected the R166 and R169 resistors and was able to see, some data being sent and received on the Tx and Rx pin *only* when I pressed the " Send Config to mmDevice" button. I get no data on Tx or Rx pin when the shift over to the plot tab in Visualiser.

I was expecting a stream of data ( in the format as given in the attached file) but I get no data on the Rx pin.

2. I disconnected the R128 and R129 resistors and still couldn't read any data from the Tx/Rx pins. Do I need to send some configuration information using the Tx & Rx pins? What is the way out for this?

Hi Anup,

To use the Visualiser with external UART, the data is shown below:

Config Port: PC -> RS232_RX(PIN7 in J6) -> RS232_RX(IWR1642)

Data Port: AR_MSS_LOGGER(IWR1642) -> AR_MSS_LOGGER(PIN9 in J5) -> PC

When you click "Send Config to mmDevice", you can probe the data in RS232_TX and RS232_RX.

When the radar is measuring, you can probe the data in AR_MSS_LOGGER.
