IWR1642BOOST: Can I Use IWR1642 Radar for Short-Range Detection (within 1 meter) With Lowered Power

Hi,

I am intended to use the IWR1642 radar for short-range (within 1 meter) human detection. In addition, I hope to lower down the power of radar due to safety concern (as the distance to the human head may be only 10 cm). However, I noticed that the Rx gain cannot be lower than 24dB as indicated in the SDK. And I cannot make the maximum detection range lower than 6.4 meters.

Any suggestion? If the IWR1642 radar is not suitable for this application, is there any other option?

Hello James,
Yes the above mentioned limits of 24dB Rx gain and 6.4mtrs detection range are correct. Since the 6.4 mtrs also gives a detection for 1mtrs that shouldn't be of a concern.
Now on the power, the concern should be on the TX power than the Rx gain. Tx power back off option should provide sufficient back off of the transmitted power for your use scenario.
