Hello all,

I am writing to seek advice on sourcing sensors and components for a project that I developing.

Overall, my objective is to capture the distance between automobile X from automobile Y in second intervals (see graphic below) for the range highlighted in red.


Below are the questions I have with respect radar systems.

  1. Would a SRR or MRR sensor be better for capturing distance data up to 30 feet?
  2. What sensor and processing unit configuration would allow me to achieve the above mentioned data capture?
  3. How many sensors would be needed to capture the distance for the range outline in red?
  4. I need to sensor data to be exported in MS Excel format.  What hardware/software would I need to capture?

Please notify me If any part of my inquiry needs further explanation.  Any guidance you can provide will be helpful and much appreciated.

    Answers to your questions: 

    1. Would a SRR or MRR sensor be better for capturing distance data up to 30 feet?

      This would probably be considered an MRR application. But these names are just blanket categories. The real question is how much range, range resolution, field of view...etc...your sensing application requires. See the sensing estimator and the associated training series for more help defining requirements. 

    2. What sensor and processing unit configuration would allow me to achieve the above mentioned data capture?

      Any of the AWR/IWR/14/16x boosterpack EVM come with a basic "out of box" demo that sets up an FMCW chirp and exports this data to serial UART port. You can then capture this on any PC with any program you want. TI provides a web application to preview the data to get users started.

      I think this was referencing something in the picture that failed to attach. Can you please re-attach?

    I am only looking to detect vehicles no more than 30feet away from the vehicle I will be operating. I have re-attached the image above.

    Thanks for posting the picture. This seems like a very typical MRR automobile range-finder application. A single AWR1642 would be a good fit in this application. AWR1642 includes 4 RX and 2 TX paths. With the AWR1642 Boosterpack TX antenna configuration, this gives you elevation or azimuth direction of arrival (depending on eval kit mounting relative to the host vehicle) across about +/30 degrees of FOV. For larger RCS objects like automobiles and motorbikes a single sensor is more than sufficient for detection. But this all depends on the exact RCS of your intended targets.
