IWR1433:Can PCB board be covered by black epoxy resin, including front and back side, antenna and chip?

Hi,team

Thank you very much for your help!

I have a question, Can the IWR1433 PCB board be covered by black epoxy resin, including front and back side, antenna and chip ? If it is feasible , How much is the thickness of the epoxy resin ? if not , What material should I use to cover the PCB board  to protect it ? Does covering material on PCB board affect radar sensitivity ?

Best Wishes,

Jacky Ye

  • Hello,

Thanks for your interest in mmWAve sensors.
Covering the PCB with black epoxy resin might affect the Antenna, Package transition to PCB and transmission line performance. Antenna, transmission line and transitions are designed with with certain dielectric property and loss tangent for the Antenna performance (Please refer to EVM user guide for Antenna performance specs). While designing the PCB, material used are Rogers substrate and Air as the mediums, by use of black epoxy resin materials would affect the effective dielectric constant hence it would alter the Radar and Antenna performance.

If you are concerned by the tarnish, there is no real difference in performance ( i.e. insertion loss ,return loss, antenna or transmission-line performance) over long term. Please refer to below thread on some of the discussion in the forum.
